Hello

APRS is not that hard to run. It sounds like the other person did not know
what packet was. In essence there are a few thing that you need to think
about. First of all do you want to track someone or do you want to be
tracked? Do you just want to receive the data or do you want to transmit
data?

Above all you need a computer to run any programs or to program the TNC.
I do not know where you live but here in the USA the majority of systems use
144.390 FM simplex to transmit data. I personally use UI-View to accomplish
this task for everything. It's a great program and you can use it to track
or be the to track. UI-VIEW is a free program( but donations are greatly
accepted for cancer research) and you can create your own maps and
digipeater setup. We have a Digi up on our tower here in Van Buren County
Michigan and we can track any one with APRS. It does not matter what
program you are using as long as the protocol is correct. I won't go into
much more detail but it is not that hard. Please feel free to contact me
you have any other questions. Here a few web site to help out if need be.

What is needed for APRS?
Of course, a GPS unit, a radio and an TNC. But how do you link them,
configure them? What software is needed. And are there units that are
stand
alone? I believe that MFJ has such units, at least a radio/TNC
combination.
What frequencies are used?
And where does one go for basic information?
From what I have read, APRS is a special aspect of Packet. I am
familiar with Packet.
Thanks...

As a small aside, if you use a Kenwood TH7D hand-held or a Kenwood
TM700 mobile station then you don't need a computer or a separate TNC;
both these rigs will run as APRS trackers as standard. If you then
connect a serial GPS they can also plot your position automatically
and other people's as waypoints in your GPS.

In terms of software, UI-View is a Windows-only product. If you are
running MacOS or Linux there are other packages available. One such is
Xastir (google to find more detail) which can be run under all three
(Windows, MacOS and Linux).

Unfortunately there is a bit of a shortage of decent maps for anywhere
outside the USA. However, if you are interested in other Windows-only
software, you might like to look at AGWTracker. It can use google-maps
which makes a lot of things far easier if you are not in the North
America.

I Hope this helps.
