I'm new to digital modes. I installed DigiPan 2.0 and have lurked in on
several QSOs.

I have a mic from the computer on top of my Yaesu FT-990, so that's the
input to DigiPan. When I click DigiPan's T/R button, I can type a message
into DigiPan, and hear the message come out of my computer speakers. Do I
simply set my mic near the speakers and key up when I click the T/R button?

DigiPan's help says:

"When you are transmitting, and not typing or sending text, the Transmit
Volume should be increased until the RF output power of the transceiver just
stops increasing, and then reduced until the power falls to half of the
amount when it just stopped increasing. This should result in maximum
undistorted output power under PSK31 operation."

I increase the volume of my computer speakers until the RF power stops
increasing, then I decrease the volume to half of that? Am I reading this
right?

Thanks much and catch you on 14.070 mode PSK31.

Hi

It is more conventional to connect the mic on your rig to the headphone
socket on your compouter and the headphone socket on your rig to the mic
socket on your computer using screened cables.

PTT is acheoived by VOX or a control line from USB/RS232 to your rig.
