Has anyone managed to use ROS Modem?
http://rosmodem.wordpress.com/

I can run the install program and get a "Installed Okay" or similar message
but I then can't find anything to run that does anything at all when I run
it.

There doesn't seem to be anything in the start menu, anything under
uninstall programs, and all the other exe files in the package with the
install program terminate instantly without producing any kind of output.

Help!

I am using Windows 7 starter edition.

Not sure if starter edition includes it but you need to start up a Virtual
PC running XP under Windows 7 for this (and other XP programes) to run.

Where does it say it's an XP only program.

I found references to people using Windows 7 for it without mentioning
anything about virtual machines or XP mode.

Why on earth would it be an XP only program when it's still being developed
now?

I fact I'm pretty sure I saw a reference to where it stores it's data in
Windows 7 and it was in a folder that does not exist in Windows XP.

Starter edition doesn't, Gareth. Virtualised XP is Professional and
Ultimate only since the whole point of it was getting the corporates
with legacy applications off XP. Doesn't seem to have worked for them,
though, which isn't surprising since it's even more convoluted and
resource-hungry than running WINE.

Brian, click the up arrow on the taskbar to display the hidden systray
icons and make sure the Realtek [1] sound manager utility isn't
running. It hogs the sound card. Starter is only available in 32 bit,
so ignore suggestions of 64 bit incompatibility.

Also from the author:

"You have to use the new ?ROS intall.exe? included in the .ZIP file.
Be careful how and where are you uncompressing the archives. You?re
making a mess with directories"

Also, make sure that when you extract the zip and run ROS install.exe,
that you right click and "Run as Administrator", otherwise the install
routine won't have access to the Program Files folder and won't be
able to install any shared objects needed by the main executable.

[1] I'll bet a pound to a pinch of snuff that the sound hardware on
that netbook [2] is Realtek's Intel HDA compatible. Everything seems
to be these days.

[2] It must be a netbook. They won't allow EMEA OEMs to install
starter on anything more powerful.

I'm thinking maybe it's be safer to forget it.

If my problems are because I didn't run it as 'administrator' and the
quality of the install program is such that it said "installed successfully"
anyway I don't trust it not to do nasty things like overwrite up to date
DLLs and OCXs with old out of date versions etc.

Safer not to bother I think.
